Introducing the Source Filmmaker & Tutorials

Every now and then you come across a product that completely redefines the way things work and the Source Filmmaker is exactly one such tool.

The Source Filmmaker is a movie-making program used by Valve to create cinematics for games directly on the Source Engine. The SFM is the tool behind the lovely videos that you see for Team Fortress 2 and also the Dota 2 International trailer from last year.

Introducing the Source Filmmaker

The Source Filmmaker (SFM) is the movie-making tool built and used by us here at Valve to make movies inside the Source game engine. Because the SFM uses the same assets as the game, anything that exists in the game can be used in the movie, and vice versa. By utilizing the hardware rendering power of a modern gaming PC, the SFM allows storytellers to work in a what-you-see-is-what-you-get environment so they can iterate in the context of what it will feel like for the final audience.

How To Play Dota 2 in Windowed Mode

Valve has added window mode functionality for DOTA 2. It allows players to run the game in windowed mode so they don’t have to switch windows (ALT-TAB) repeatedly to use messengers Skype, YouTube, WLM and other applications. 1. Launch Steam client and login your account.
  2. Go the games Library, right-click Dota 2 and open properties

  3. Then click, Set game Launch options. And enter “-windowed” command and click ‘OK’

  4. It will run the game in Windowed mode. But you need to set Width and Height to according to your needs.
  5. Add “-h #” and “-w #” command after “-windowed” to set your specific resolution, replace hash with the number of pixels.
  6.  You may need to remove the borders and start-up video, Enter “-noborder” and “-novid” to remove it!

Expand Your knowledge (Heropedia)

Ever game should have a neat and expandable base of knowledge and the new Heropedia is going to offer exactly that for Dota 2.

Heropedia will be available to you all via the Learn Tab in the game or directly on the Dota 2 website.

The Heroes page will be filled with all the information you will ever need to know about a hero starting off with special skill preview videos made by the good folks at Dota Cinema. The Items page on the other hand will give you a nice clean preview on all the items in the game.
This is just the start to the Heropedia though. Over the next few months, the same pages will be expanded with new features such as user guides for heroes, artworks and so much much more.

DOTA 2 Luna Moon Rider Guide, Strategy & Builds

                                                                    Luna Background Story:-
How had she been reduced to this? She was once the Scourge of the Plains, a merciless leader of men and beasts, and able to sow terror wherever she dared. Now she was far from her homeland, driven half mad from starvation and months of wandering, her army long dead or turned to worse. As she stood at the edge of an ancient forest, a pair of glowing eyes spied on from an elder branch. Something beautiful and deadly sought a meal in the wilting dusk. Without a sound, it turned and left. Fury overtook her. Clutching a rust-eaten dagger, she charged after the beast determined to reclaim even a shred of her past glory, but her quarry would not be caught. Three times she cornered the creature among the rocks and trees, and three times she pounced only to witness its fading shadow darting further into the woods. Yet the full moon shone brightly, and the creature’s trail was easy to follow.
Arriving in a clearing atop a high hill, the beast’s massive feline form sat in the open, attentive and waiting. When the woman brandished her dagger, the creature reared and roared and charged. Death, it seemed, had come for her at long last in this strange place. She stood, calm and ready. A flash of movement, and the beast snatched the dagger from her hand before vanishing into the forest. Stillness. Hooded figures approached. In reverent tones they revealed that Selemene, Goddess of the Moon, had chosen her, had guided her, had tested her. Unwittingly she had endured the sacred rites of the Dark Moon, warriors of the Nightsilver Woods.
She was offered a choice: join the Dark Moon and pledge herself to the service of Selemene, or leave and never return. She did not hesitate. Embracing her absolution, she renounced her bloody past, and took up a new mantle as Luna of the Dark Moon, the dreaded Moon Rider, ruthless and ever-loyal guardian of the Nightsilver Woods.

DOTA 2 Guardian Wisp (Io) Guide, Strategy & Builds

Guardian Wisp (Io) Background Story:-
Wisp is everywhere, and in all things. Denounced by enemies as the great unmaker, worshiped by scholars as the twinkling of a divine eye, Wisp occupies all planes at once, the merest fraction of its being crossing into physical existence at any one moment.
Like the great twin riders Dark and Light, and yet another ancient traveler whose true history is lost to the ages, Io the Wisp is a Fundamental of the universe—a force older than time, a wanderer from realms far beyond mortal understanding. Wisp is nothing less than the sum of all attractive and repulsive forces within matter, a sentient manifestation of the charge that bind particles together. It is only in the controlled warping of these forces that Wisp’s presence can be experienced on the physical plane. A benevolent, cooperative force, Wisp bonds its strength to others so that the power of allies might be enhanced. Its motives inscrutable, its strength unimaginable, moves through the physical plane, the perfect expression of the mysteries of the universe.

Name: Wisp (Dota 2), Io Guardian Wisp (DotA)
Affiliation: The Radiant
 Type: Strength

Guardian Wisp (Io)  Skills:-
Tether
Tether yourself to an allied hero granting both of you bonus movement. When you heal health or mana your target gains the same amount. Stuns any enemy unit that crosses the tether. Breaks when they distance is too great or you cancel the tether.
Break Tether (Tether’s Subskill)
Break the link to the unit you are tethered to.
Spirits
Summon five spirits that dance in a circle damaging all that they hit around you. If the wisp hits an enemy hero they will explode damaging all in an area around them.

Spirits In (Spirits’s Subskill)
Calls the spirits closer to you. Can be toggled on and off.
Spirits Out (Spirits’s Subskill)
Sends the spirits farther away from you. Can be toggled on and off.
Overcharge
You and any unit that you have tethered gain increased attack speed and damage resistance at the cost of draining 2.5% of your health and mana per second.
Relocate (Ultimate)
Teleport yourself and any tethered ally to any location on the map. After the spell expires you and any tethered ally will return to where you teleported from.

DOTA 2 Rubick Guide, Strategy & Builds

Rubick Background Story:-
Any mage can cast a spell or two, and a few may even study long enough to become a wizard, but only the most talented are allowed to be recognized as a Magus. Yet as with any sorcerer’s circle, a sense of community has never guaranteed competitive courtesy.
Already a renowned duelist and scholar of the grander world of sorcery, it had never occurred to Rubick that he might perhaps be Magus material until he was in the midst of his seventh assassination attempt. As he casually tossed the twelfth of a string of would-be killers from a high balcony, it dawned on him how utterly unimaginative the attempts on his life had become. Where once the interruption of a fingersnap or firehand might have put a cheerful spring in his step, it had all become so very predictable. He craved greater competition. Therefore, donning his combat mask, he did what any wizard seeking to ascend the ranks would do: he announced his intention kill a Magus.
Rubick quickly discovered that to threaten one Magus is to threaten them all, and they fell upon him in force. Each antagonist’s spell was an unstoppable torrent of energy, and every attack a calculated killing blow. But very soon something occurred that Rubick’s foes found unexpected: their arts appeared to turn against them. Inside the magic maelstrom, Rubick chuckled, subtly reading and replicating the powers of one in order to cast it against another, sowing chaos among those who had allied against him. Accusations of betrayal began to fly, and soon the sorcerers turned one upon another without suspecting who was behind their undoing.
Rubick Steal Firefly

When the battle finally drew to a close, all were singed and frozen, soaked and cut and pierced. More than one lay dead by an ally’s craft. Rubick stood apart, sore but delighted in the week’s festivities. None had the strength to argue when he presented his petition of assumption to the Hidden Council, and the Insubstantial Eleven agreed as one to grant him the title of Grand Magus.”

Once we’ve got the kinks ironed out of the Team system, we’ll be opening it up to everyone, including the Team Matchmaking system where you’ll be able to find public matches against other organized teams. If you want to get a head start on building your Team in the meantime, we’ve put together a collection of example logos for you to work off. You can grab that here.
That’s it for the first competitive play update. As we said at the start, we have many plans in this space, but as always we need feedback to know if we’re doing it right. If you’re a professional player, a tournament organizer, a spectator, or just someone reading this blog, we’d love to hear what you think – both in terms of what we’re shipping now, and in terms of what you think we should be doing in the future to improve this space.
On a final note, a few days ago we released a bunch of info for those of you interested in making items for the Dota 2 Workshop. Even if you’re not an artist, it seemed many people found the Dota 2 Art Guide and Dota 2 Texture Guide interesting, so make sure you check them out.

This week we’re shipping the first of a large set of planned features designed to improve Dota’s support for high end competitive play. Dota’s always held a powerful place in the competitive scene, so we’ve always wanted it to do more to help. From the data we gather throughout the system, it’s clear that many players, of all skill levels, find it entertaining to watch highly skilled players. So, in the same way that we’ve used the Steam Workshop to connect people that are creating a lot of value for customers who are enjoying it, we think we need to connect tournament organizers and professional players to their fans. Our next update includes the first step towards this.
This first piece is the Tournament view in the game client. Here, you can find current and past tournaments, and choose which ones you think are worth paying to watch. For the tournaments you’ve purchased, you’ll find a complete breakdown of the tournament’s matches, and be able to quickly jump in and watch them in your game client (whether it’s a live match, or a replay). Whenever you purchase a tournament, we’ll share the money you spend with the organizers of the tournament. We’ll be testing this immediately with The Defense, and if it works out well for everyone, we anticipate rolling it out to all tournaments. This won’t be the end of our features for tournaments, or players, but we think it’s the right first step – helping tournaments become more financially stable helps all the players participating in them.

Our goal here isn’t to replace web-based streams – we think those are fantastic, and we’ll continue to do the best we can to support them. Some customers will always prefer to use their web browser to watch matches. But we think there are some customers who’d like to invest in a higher fidelity, richer experience that they have more control over, and we hope to be able to provide that with the in-game Tournament view. We also believe that external companies providing financial support for tournaments is a crucial component to the competitive scene, and we have several ideas for how to provide them with features that will work in both the Tournament view and web-based streams.

The second piece we’re shipping is better in-game support for competitive teams. The Defense will be the first test of our new Team system, where players identify themselves to Dota 2 as a competitive team, and provide a set of information about themselves. In addition to storing a variety of statistics about the long term performance of the Team, the game also detects matches between competitive teams, and uses the Team’s information to highlight the match. For example, here you can see our internal Valve Lambda team’s base:

Dota 2 Patch Notes (June 7 2012): Chaos Knight, Phantom Assassin and Gyrocopter Enabled!

Valve has added either none or one new hero to Dota 2 in the weekly patch. Tonight, they blow our minds with three new heros to play! They are: Chaos Knight, Phantom Assassin and Gyrocopter, and they made it into the test build!

Phantom Assassin, also known as Mortred, is a melee hard carry with amazing chasing abilities and the highest critical strike in the game. Chaos knight can offer a stun and some of the strongest illusions in the world of Dota2. Gyrocopter, a quite new hero by way of comparison, is all about dealing a lot of AoE (Area of Effect) damage in all stages of the match, thanks to his various powerful rockets.

The second highlight of the latest update is a beautiful addition to the replay system: Replays can now be watched by just clicking on a certain link. Beyond that, it's even possible to create a URL that allows viewers to start watching at a specific point in time. This will make it a lot easier to show someone a particular highlight from a round of Dota 2.
